Description	Root biomass production is highly variable. Environmental conditions and meadow management affect root development and thence plant, community and ecosystem properties. In this study we evaluated the seasonal changes in root biomass production (years 2002 and 2003). Treatments were: no treatment, once mowing, once mowing and mulching, twice mowing, twice mowing and N fertilization and twice mowing and mulching. The highest root biomass production was under no treatment and twice mowing and N fertilization treatments (1546 and 1253 g.m-2, respectively) in 2002. The next year, root biomass slightly increased in twice mowing and once mowing and mulching treatments, and it was reduced in other treatments. No treated plots had a dramatically root biomass production decrease Root biomass production is highly variable.
