Description
  • In the context of language testing, the use of multiple choice items has become very common, especially in their four-choice form. However, specialist literature has cast doubt on the universal correctness of the practice. Therefore the authors have decided to conduct a study comparing analytical findings from three-choice items with those of four-choice items. The main research question focuses on finding out whether there are significant differences between these two types in terms of test reliability, individual and average item difficulty, and individual and average discrimination index. The methodology of the study will be based on comparing two parallel forms of the same reading test in such a way that these two test versions will consist of the same number of items containing both three- and four-choice items. The presently existing test, already analysed by common statistical methods, will be used for the study. To create three-choice items, the existing four-choice items will be used, but with the least functioning distractor removed. Apart from purely academic interest, the study is going to be conducted also to possibly innovate and make more efficient the current format of STANAG 6001 tests, hence to enhance its practicality.
