  • The aim of the work was to find out if nitrogen is removed from the wastewater under permanently aerobic or under permanently anaerobic conditions. Transformations of inorganic forms of nitrogen and heterotrophic microbial activities were studied under aerobic and under anaerobic conditions. The gravel substrate was sampled from the upper and from the lower layers of two constructed wetlands with horizontal sub-surface flow in South Bohemia, Czech Republic. The substrate with pore water was then incubated in a flasks in constant temperature under aerobic (air) or under anaerobic (helium) conditions. After 7-days incubation inorganic forms of nitrogen, gaseous products like CO2, CH4 and N2O were analyzed. Concentration of TON and of TIN increased in the pore water during 7 days of aerobic incubation.
