Description
  • Objective: The main aim of the research is to show the impact of social situation of seniors on their health. This research is based on the concept of ten social determinants of health published by Wilkinson and Marmot in 2003 in Copenhagen. A secondary aim was to find connection between chosen factors of social situation in seniors and the state of their nutrition. Methods: This contribution presents preliminary results from the research project on Social determinants of health in chosen target groups (nr. SDZ2012_002) as supported by bound reserves for science and research development of the Faculty of health and social science of the University of South Bohemia. Qualitative method of in depth interview was used for data collection. The interview was further transcribed and subjected to analysis. Obtained data were coded and categorised. The research group consisted of 17 seniors, aged above 65 living in South Bohemian region in home environment. Results: Analysed results indicate that food intake is perceived as a process followed by the presence of positive emotions, feeling of satisfaction and happiness. In a case when the mind is bound with negative emotions manifestation of lack of appetite, feeling of nausea, food antipathy and feeling of full stomach follow. Regarding nutrition the influence of depressive states has very individual impact in seniors. On the one hand, overeating is a possible outcome invariably connected to overweight and even obesity. On the other hand, sharp decrease or even discontinuation of food intake can also often be the consequence. Conclusion: Results of qualitative research will be further used in quantitative analysis. Based on the results statistically significant connections between the health state of seniors and social determinants of health will be drawn.
