Description
  • The genetic transformation of plants is an efficient tool for studying the functions of various genes and their regulatory elements. It is also a very promising method for the modification and improvement of various agronomic and horticultural traits, resulting in the production of genetically modified (GM) plants ? transgenic crops. Genetic transformation is a subject of intensive research, including the identification and cloning of important genes, the development of the most effective strategies for insertion of these genes into the host genome and the selection of the transformation events most likely to result in future GM organisms (GMOs). Fundamental research on the development of GMOs is the subject of considerable global interest, as are also studies concerning their safety to human and animal health and their possible ecological impacts on the environment and current agro-ecosystems, reflecting the demands of regulatory authorities and the public. The use of 'model' or 'marker' genes can allow for the rapid and efficient assessment of a large number of transformation procedures, selection of elite transgenic events and evaluation of the behavior of GMOs following their introduction into agro-ecosystems.
