Description
  • In her paper, the author discusses a phenomenon of yet unflagging human interest in darkness in literature, paying attention mainly to pieces of the contemporary American literary world that are dedicated to stories of murderers and infamous serial killers. Throughout history, various authors have tried to attract their readers in numerous ways. To scare and drag them into violent desires of the human mind have been among them. It seems that the American readership of the last several decades is still more and more fascinated with both real and fictitious stories of murderers and their victims. A number of serial killers have even evolved into adored and celebrated icons. One example for all is Jeff Lindsay's character of Dexter Morgan, %22a serial killer with a heart%22 (Lindsay 2004). The main objective of the paper is therefore to introduce some of the newly-born celebrities representing darkness in contemporary American literature and show how are they and their stories as well as characters, often with wicked and twisted identities, presented in and between the lines, accepted by ordinary readers and society in general
