Description
  • Although it is generally accepted that farming spread into central Europe from the Near East (5700-5500 BC), disagreements prevail about the relative contribution of newly arriving farmers and indigenous foragers to the formation of farming communities. Although the problem of relative importance of population movement versus cultural diffusion has been approached from various positions, little attention has been paid to demographic modeling. In our study, demographic simulations were performed to assess the demographic conditions that would allow the LBK farmers spread across central Europe without any admixture with Mesolithic foragers. Our study supports the view that the foragers significantly contributed to the spread of farming in central Europe.
