Description
  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of pregnancy in cows on milk production measured as kg and content of milk components. The comparison was made between pregnant and non-pregnant twins created from multiple births. The monitored twins, born between years 2000–2006 (n = 97), had the same father and mother, the first calving occurred at the same farm and in the same time period (±1 month). The aim was to create cow pairs, comparable in terms of genetic and environmental factors at first lactation. The first group included cows which became pregnant 60 days after calving. The second group was made up of their non pregnant twin-equals. The results showed differences in milk production. Measured traits were daily milk production in kg, fat in % and protein content in kg, and somatic cell count. There was a statistically insignificant decline in milk production in pregnant cows for each time period of pregnancy (1–30; 31–60; 61–90 and 91 to 120 days). This was -0.46; -1.33; -1.65 and -1.97 kg of milk respectively. A similar trend was recorded for fat and protein production (in kg). In this case too there was lower production in pregnant cows. The differences were very low, statistically insignificant and varied in range from +0.06 to -0.09 %. For somatic cell count there was an insignificant reduction in number for each time period of pregnancy (1–30; 31–60; 61–90 and 91to 120 days). The reduction in pregnant cows was -52; -133; -107 and -138 ths. somatic cell count respectively. These results show that there is small but insignificant reduction in production (kg of milk, % of fat, kg of protein) in pregnant cows compared to their non-pregnant equals. Small insignificant reduction was also found for somatic cell count. The content of milk components (in %) was identical in both groups of cows.
