Description	Energy has become one of the most debated topics in the current relations between the European Union and the Russian Federation. The aim of this paper is to explain why controversial issues in the energy relations between the European Union and the Russian Federation occur and what their character is. This paper is based on the assumption that the main aspects that negatively influence the mutual energy relations and limit the energy cooperation can be defined as (1) the differences in the degree of interdependence in the energy relations between the EU and Russia, (2) the different interests and goals of the EU and the Russian energy policy, and (3) the divergent approaches of the EU and Russia towards their mutual energy relationship.
