  • Microorganisms like bacteria and viruses commonly infect humans in the living environment. Especially bacterial strains of staphylococci, streptococci or enterococci are ubiquitous colonisers of human epithelia and are grave pathogens involved in nosocomial infections. They can produce different types of toxins and they exhibit a frequent and sometimes a multiple resistance to antimicrobials (antibiotics). In this study, a hybrid coating based on TMSPM (3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate, MMA (methyl methacrylate), TEOS (tetraethyl orthosilicate) and IPTI (titanium isopropoxide) containing silver, copper and zinc ions was prepared by the sol-gel method. The coating was deposited on different types of substrates through dip-coating, spin coating or flow coating, and then treated by heat polymerisation or photopolymerisation. Seven types of pathogenic bacterial strains were used to determine the profile of the antibacterial activity. All the samples were tested through irradiating with a UV A or at the day light. The hybrid coating was found to possess an excellent antibacterial effect, including that one against the pathogenic bacterial strains of MRSA, which represents a serious threat on a global scale.
