| - There has always been a debate to what extent a translator is an artist or just a worker mechanically replacing words in one language by words in another language. The gap has deepened even more after technical and legal texts started to be the most frequently translated and mainly after the introduction of computer assisted translation (CAT). While technology might be stealing a part of translator's identity, it has a potential to be a great tool, not onlz for the commonly presented reasons of increased productivity and improved consistency. It can be also effectively used in training of translators providing them, with an option to compare their solutions with others, and thus extend the range of their own choices and lad to better competence. As a part of a project solved at the English Department of TUL we have decided to study the way a translation memory (TM) can be usec in courses of translation for future teachers of English. The paper consists of three parts. In the first part, the theory of computer assisted translation and the empirical research in this area is presented. In the second part the project and its first results are introduced: its partial aims, texts used for translation and the way a TM was implemented in the translation process. The last presents the results gained so far and also a short summary by the student involved on what his first impressions of the work with a TM were.
