Description
| - Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is a widely used hydrophylic polymer with an enormous potential in medical applications involving extremely high absorption of water, swelling, sensitivity to pH and temperature; for example, as wound dressing. Because of the polar carboxyl groups is CMC highly soluble. Crosslinking by plasma treatment operates on a similar principle as the radiation crosslinking, i.e. of formation of free radicals. Compared to chemical crosslinking plasma crosslinking is environmentally friendly. This study deals with the change of sorption properties of samples of modified CMC after crosslinking by plasma treatment. For the plasma treatment plasma was applied in the vacuum chamber. The effect of exposure time on the solubility of films was observed. The best process paramentres: discharged power = 250 W, plasma treatment time = 1-90 s. For comparison the experiment was carried out with atmospheric plasma as well.
