Description
  • In spite of numerous advantages of membrane technology, there are still some drawbacks limiting its widespread application in the field of water and wastewater treatment. The most serious problem is fouling of membrane surface. Several ways how to minimize membrane fouling and improve long-term filtration performance have been tested so far. Modification of commercial membranes by silver in the nanometre size-range can be a promising option for achieving long-term membrane permeabilities and antimicrobial features. The main goal was to compare the filtration performance of commercially available ultrafiltration membrane NADIR UP 150 that was modified by silver in different forms. Original membrane surface was functionalized with polyethyleneimine-capped nanosilver, sorption of silver followed by its subsequent reduction, and silver-containing nanofibers. The modified membranes were compared to unmodified one. To determine the changes in permeabilities of newly modified membranes, all membranes were tested with demineralized water as well as real wastewater treatment plant effluent. The antimicrobial properties, silver leaching and contact angle were examined as well. From the overall results, it can be stated that all modified membranes contained tightly bound silver and showed antimicrobial properties. Only the membrane modified by sorption method showed higher permeability compared with unmodified one. Membranes modified by nanofibers reached conversely the lowest values of permeability. Results of filtration tests also corresponded to the contact angle, which was the highest for the membranes modified through nanofibers.
