  • In this paper we investigate optimizing preventive maintenance of a multicomponent system. The future state of the system is dependent on the actual state and on the maintenance action taken. The model is motivated by the problem of planning maintenance for an eight coal-grinding mill system in one block of a coal power plant. The goal is to decide whether to repair a mill in the poor condition but still good performance or the one in fairly new condition but poorly performing. If we do not repair the one in poor condition we may threaten the functioning of the whole system. On the other hand the poorly performing mill increases the load of other mills causing them to degrade faster. The strategy must also take into account the big picture of all 8 mills. The Markov decision model is suggested as an approach to find an optimal strategy.
