Description
| - Rotor supported in strongly non-linear bearings can be for the purpose of transient analysis treated as a free-free rotor with bearing reactions acting as excitation forces. Finite element models of such rotor are accessible by numerical solvers in physical domain, although the number of degrees of freedom might be unnecessarily high for adequate description of system dynamics. In such cases a reduction of free-free rotor model is desirable. When non-negligible gyroscopic effects are present, the free-free rotor model turns into defective system, that is non-diagonalizable in terms of spectral decomposition. It is shown that defectiveness of this system relates to its rigid modes. Feasibility of three potential reduction methods are studied at this paper: Modal reduction by partial decoupling of the system (neglecting gyroscopic matrix for modal matrix assembly), Craig-Bampton method in state space for generalized damping, and the approach of classical Craig-Bampton method with partial decoupling of gyroscopic matrix.
