Description	Artwork and its meaning are agreed upon in every social act and, therefore, develop as a part of a certain cultural region. Culture is understood as a variable social construct, a non-hierarchical and complex ?hypertext? whose features are instability and openness caused by a variable context derived from its social and communicative functions. It is a system of features, actively transformed during a designation process. On a concrete example of the Etropa installation by David Černý, the article studies the social, political and cultural relationships which uncover the problematic perception of national identity by various social groups in the time of formation of a joint European region. The article illustrates the importance of context ? an interpretative framework, which codetermines the meaning of an artwork and uncovers behavioral models of society as well as stereotypical interpretations.
