Description
  • Pollution of rivers, lakes and soil by herbicides has become a serious problem in recent years. In the environment, many of these compounds can remain active for several years, causing ecological damage. Currently the most commonly used high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) can not be used for continuous, on-site analysis. The use of biosensors has opened a possibility for monitoring of environmental pollution of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The binding and affinity of some herbicides to the PSII core offered a good possibility to use PSII preparations as biological receptors for biosensors. Recently, an electrochemical biosensor for the detection of photosynthetic herbicides have been developed, using the oxygene-evolving PSII particles from the thermophilic cyanobacterium Synechoccocus elngatus, as biosensing elements (Koblizek et al. 1998). A modified imobilisation methods using recombinant PSII and Langmuir-Blodgett technique of
