Description
  • In electrodialysis the rate of transport depends on the electric current flowing between the electrodes. At certain current level (so-called the limiting current) the transport rate of ions from the laminar boundary layer at membrane surface through the membrane becomes higher than the transport rate through the laminar boundary layer. The concentration of ions at membrane surface reaches zero and the water splitting takes place in order to generate ions. This causes the pH changes and the decrease of current efficiency. The limiting current density depends on the electrolyte type and concentration and hydrodynamic conditions in the membrane stack. Goals of this work were to determine the limiting current density at laboratory-scale electrodialysis module at different diluate linear flow velocities and inlet ammonium nitrate concentrations, to compare the exactness and suitability of experimental data evaluation methods and to determine the dependence between the limiting current density, diluate linear flow velocity and inlet electrolyte concentration.
