Description
| - The article deals with the issue of Turkey as an increasingly significant transit hub on the East-West route, supplying the oil and natural gas resources of the Caspian Sea basin to the world markets in general and Europe in particular. It identifies the milestones of energy security-related policies that have recently catapulted Ankara into its current standing of a bridge between the key oil and natural gas producers in the post-Soviet space, including Russia, Azerbaijan, prospectively also Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan on the one hand, and European customers on the other hand. The role of Turkey as a key transit country is scrutinized both in the context of its internal politics reflecting on the current government's efforts to turn Turkey into a key player in the region, and the evolution of (geo)economic issues in the Mediterranean-Caspian-Persian Gulf macro region with implications for North Atlantic energy security.
