Description
  • The paper presents metallographic observations of welded joints in high-strength steels. It brings a comparison of changes in material microstructure upon laser welding and upon MAG welding (Metal Active Gas). The size of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) was one order of magnitude smaller and the grain considerably finer in case of the laser beam welding. This is also reflected in resulting properties of these joints. The strength of a laser-welded joint in the material Docol 1200M remains basically equal to that of the parent metal, whereas the strength of the MAG welded joint was about one half lower. In case of failure the MAG welds typically fracture along the border between the HAZ and the parent metal, while failure in laser welds occurs along the fusion line.
