Description
  • During the process of fabrication of martensitic stainless steel apparatus and equipment, heat treating operations as well as unavoidable exposures to elevated temperatures can provoke structural changes—detrimental sensitization on the one hand which makes the steel susceptible to localized corrosion, and beneficial formation of temper austenite on the other hand which makes the steel weldable. To evaluate such changes, the electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation (EPR) test was applied to grade 14Cr17Ni2 (compressor blade) martensitic steel, to grade Cr13Ni6Mo (weldable, so-called COR type) martensitic-austenitic steel, to precipitation hardenable stainless steel Cr10Ni10Mo2 and also to gradeCr12Ni5MoCu (low interstitial) martensitic steels. This nondestructive, on site technique allowed to quantify the degreeof sensitization and to assess the structural state after thermal treatment and the percentage of secondary austenite in the structure.
