Description
  • Heat exchanger fins of complex configuration are formed from thin aluminium sheets. Formability of Al sheets depends on the production technology used. Sheets of high formability are produced by direct-chill (DC) casting and hot rolling. However, using the modern technology of continuous strip-casting and cold rolling a substantial reduction of material and energy costs is achieved. A study of typical cracks which occur during forming operations of heat exchanger fins from strip-cast AA 8006 sheets is presented. It was found that in several cases failure is due to surface grain size inhomogeneity. In other cases crack initiation is probably caused by local concentration of deformation. The insufficient formability of strip-cast AA 8006 thin sheets can also be due to high initial work hardening rate related to the presence of a dense distribution of Al-Fe-Si intermetallic particles in the structure.
