Description
(cs)
  • The ´Wangenheim Prune´ rootstock was tested in comparison to the standard Myrobalan seedlings in a trial with 10 cultivars. The experimental orchard was established at Holovousy in the spring of 1998 with a spacing of 5 x 1.5 m. Trees on ´Wangenheim Prune´ seedlings grew about one third weaker in the first four or five years, but were more precocious in bearing than those on Myrobalan seedlings. Trees of most of the cultivars on the rootstock had higher yield efficiency in the first several years of their cropping. The ´Wangenheim Prune´ seedling improved also somewhat the fruit weight of some cultivars besides the effect on higher yields. Later, the differences between the rootstocks mostly disappeared but trees on ´Wangenheim Prune´ seedlings had less demands for the severity of restriction pruning. Considering all aspects, the ´Wangenheim Prune´ seedling seems to be, at the present time, one of the best rootstocks for modern plum orchards planted in higher planting densities.
