Description
  • Long-term performance of constructed wetlands with horizontal subsurface flow has been discussed since this type of treatment was introduced (Cooper et al., 2005). The early studies suggested that the performance would improve over the time of operation as the filtration bed becomes more aerobic due to increased growth of roots and rhizomes which provide oxygen necessary for aerobic degradation organics and nitrification. The belowground growth should also improve hydraulic conductivity of the filtration bed (Kickuth, 1981). Neither the oxygenation nor better hydraulic conductivity have been confirmed (Brix, 1987, 1990) and, in addition, clogging of filtration beds became an issue in many systems (Kadlec and Wallace, 2008). The objective of this paper is to describe the treatment performance of a constructed wetland with horizontal flow treating municipal sewage in the Czech Republic over the 15-year period of operation.
