Description
  • Under the denomination geopolymers, composites based on alkali activated metakaolin are preferably introduced (%22true%22 geopolymers, without calcium component), imitating natural zeolites. Their microstructure and properties are strongly dependent on the Si/Al/Na(K) ratio. As aggregate, finely ground quartz sand is preferebly used up to 80 - 90 % in the final mixture added as a last mineral component, regulating at the same time the demanded consistency. Superlasticizers are practically uneffective. The use of potassium instead of sodium compounds ensures high strengths and prevents the formation of efflorescence, KOH is prefered. As an alkailne activator, sodium or potassium silicate (water glass) need not be used. Treatment at higher temperatures increases the strengths. The zeolitic character of this amorphous geopolymeric material brings about its long-term durability and enables its use for castings in architecture and sculpture imitating the sandstone.
