  • Current literature provides only limited amount of detailed practical information upon construction of a multi-state hidden Markov model designated for nonstationary environmental acoustical noise representation. This model plays an important role in model-based methods for noise-robust speech recognition such as parallel model combination. This paper points out the importance of careful initialization of such model and provides experimental comparison of several possible approaches to model construction using various clustering schemes and Bayesian information criterion-based signal segmentation.
