  • Given the current very stringent competition between steel and concrete, ways are being investigated with the view to make steel more competitive. One of them is undoubtedly to strive to reduce the cost of the fabrication of steel structures in general, and of steel bridges in particular. Within the framework of so doing, we should do our best in order to make the fabrication tolerances for the plate elements of steel structures less severe. Bearing this in mind, an extensive analysis of the effect of the initial imperfections of the web of steel girders on their ultimate limit state is studied by the authors. The investigation is based on non-linear elasto-plastic large-deflection theory, realistic (ie. based on measurements on ordinary steelwork) configurations and magnitudes of web initial curvature being considered. The solution will be described in detail in the authors contribution and the conclusions drawn therefrom presented.
