Description
| - This article begins with a historical survey of Czech immigration to Canada. Four great waves can be designated: during and after the First World War, the period before World War II, after World War II (especially after 1948) and following the invasion by Warsaw Pact armies in 1968. The centers with the largest concentrations of Czechs are described, including the many communities with branches of the Czech and Slovak Association of Canada (CSAC) and other organizations founded by Czechs and Slovaks to support themselves in their new home as well as their compatriots in their old homeland. Among the various cultural activities over the years include the founding of Czech language theatre groups in Vancouver and Toronto as well as several Czech newspapers and publishing houses, notably Sixty-Eight Publishers, established by Zdena Salivarová and Josef Škvorecký. Finally brief descriptions of the careers and works of prominent Czech scholars in Canada are featured, including Lubomír Doležel, Marketa Goetz-Stankiewicz, Eva Kushner, Eve Le Grand and Bohumil Moravec
