| - The paper reflects on the importance of developing intercultural competence (also named cross-cultural or multicultural competence) as an integral part of the educational process. As our world is becoming increasingly more multicultural, our ability to understand, appreciate and embrace diversity needs conscious cultivating. Learning a foreign language is one step in this long process and because cultural studies have been recognized as an indispensable part of language acquisition, it is only natural to include the developing of inter-cultural communicative competence into ELT class. The paper argues that a literary text in general, and a coming-of-age novel in particular, can be effectively used not only as a tool for developing standard language skills but also for the developing of learners? intercultural competence. This assertion will be illustrated on the example of the critically highly acclaimed novel Anita and Me by Meera Syal.
