  • The study focuses on one narrow area of word order that seems to cause problems to Czech native speakers learning English as a second language, i.e. the position of adverbials within a clause. The scope is narrowed down to adverbials represented by one-word adverb phrases, modifying VP or higher structures, syntactically integrated into clauses. Adverbials are defined in contrast to other elements, and special attention is paid to the specific positions of adverbials functioning as verb phrase modifiers. The problem of placement of adverbials is particularly significant from the point of view of second language acquisition. Since adverbials are always labelled as the most flexible element in English clause structure, learners can very easily get the impression that they are free elements. Thus in the second chapter there are presented some concrete examples of actual textbooks to show how they deal with the topic.   • Práce se zabývá problematikou postavení příslovečného určení v anglickém slovosledu, a to v perspektivě osvojování si dalšího jazyka. Linearita je jedním ze základních charakteristických rysů jazykového systému, neboť jazykové jednotky nelze uspořádat jinak než lineárně. V každém jazyce ovšem platí jiná pravidla pro uspořádání těchto jednotek. Mezi angličtinou a češtinou existují typologicky značně rozdílné charakteristické rysy, což má za následek odlišnosti právě v uspořádání větných členů uvnitř věty. Anglický pořádek slov je tradičně nazýván fixní, český pořádek slov volný. Jde samozřejmě o charakteristiku značně zjednodušující. V obou jazycích je totiž pozice jednotlivých větných členů více či méně určována různými činiteli (gramatickými, aktuálního členění, emocionality výpovědi).Cílem práce tedy bylo definovat pozice, ve kterých se jednoslovná příslovečná určení v anglické větě mohou vyskytovat v závislosti na svých sémantických charakteristikách, zjistit, jak tyto pozice a jejich sémantické re (cs)
