Description
  • Rare-earth deposits in Mongolia show a wide spatial distribution, and are associated with rocks of carbonatitic affinity, primary and metasomatically modified peralkaline granitic rocks and associated placer and residual deposits. The distribution of these deposits is controlled by the large-scale tectonic structures of Northern Gobi Rift Zone, Gobi-Tien Shan Fold Belt and Lake Tectonic Zone and local geomorphology. The deposits of the Northern Gobi Rift Zone are associated with Late Mesozoic rifting (Early Cretaceous;139 - 120 Ma). Associated fluorocabonate mineralization in carbonatites and REE-rich britholite in nelsonites of Mushgai Khudag, Bayan Khushuu, Khotgor and Tsogt Ovoo deposits reaches up to 12 wt. % REE2O3 (predominantly LREE).
