Description
  • The tapeworm species Bertiella satyri (Blanchard,1891) from the semi-wild Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii: Ponginae) is redescribed on the basis of morphological characterization and by sequencing of 18S rDNA, the partial internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS-1), the partial internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS-2), and partial 28S rDNA. The partial sequences of 18S and 28S rDNA of B.satytri were analyzed and compared with other Cestode sequences. Molecular analyses supports position of this Cestode species based on the morphological observation. The species is evaluated as a valid taxon in the Bertiella family and the resurrection of the name B. satyri is proposed. From the species B. studeri (Blanchard,1891) parasitizing African chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes: Homininae) is B. satyri differenciated by the following complex of characters: irregular alternating genital pores, number of testes (166-190), smaller eggs, host (Pongo vs. Pan) and zoogeographical difference (Asia vs. Africa).
