Description
| - The study of possible phototransformations of the persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in ice and snow have been in the center of our attention in recent years. Methodology for laboratory modeling of environmental photochemistry in the rigid matrices, with the special focus on the water ice has been developed. In this study, we focused on the photochemistry of organic compounds in ice in the presence of inorganic nitrates and nitrites as the potential source of OH and NOx radicals. The production of gas phase NOx has been observed on the snow surface in polar region as a result of the nitrate photochemistry. Besides, nitrophenol, nitrosophenol, and dihydroxybenzene are known photoproducts in the photolysis of aqueous solutions of inorganic nitrates and nitrites in the presence of phenol in the laboratory conditions. Our laboratory experiments were performed in liquid water as well as solid ice matrices and results will be presented.
