| - The study investigates the photochemical properties of a potential photosensitiser, indocyanine green (ICG), in vitro. Cytotoxicity ICG was evaluated on HeLa cells and V79 Chinese hamster fibroblasts by means of MTT assay. HeLa proliferation was studied under a combined influence of effective concentration of 24 – 94 uM ICG and a laser irradiation at different energy densities. Phototoxicity was evaluated at 1, 24, and 48 hours after irradiation. No phototoxic effect was detected 1 hour after irradiation. The maximal phototoxic effect of ICG on HeLa cells was detected for an ICG concentration of 94 uM, a laser output of 360 mW, and the energy density of 99 J/cm2 24 hours after irradiation. ICG and tested by itself non-toxic 20 uM H2O2 were added at the same time to HeLa cells to enhance the phototoxic effects. 48 hours after laser irradiation a significant difference was found between the toxicity of ICG plus peroxide as compared to ICG alone.
