  • Gli avvenimenti dell’anno 1925, quando il nunzio apostolico Francesco Marmaggi abbandono Praga dopo che i membri del Governo cecoslovacco avevano partecipato in veste ufficiale all’anniversario della morte di Jan Hus, sono ben noti. Meno noto e l’episodio collegato al congresso internazionale del “Sokol”, che si svolse nel 1926, si concluse proprio il 6 luglio e che fu seguito con attenzione dalla curia romana. L’associazione del “Sokol” era vista dal Vaticano come un’organizzazione fortemente anticlericale. La diplomazia del Vaticano fece un notevole sforzo per impedire la partecipazione delle rappresentanze straniere e in alcuni casi questo sforzo ebbe successo. Per esempio proprio la delegazione italiana cancello la sua partecipazione. Il primo ministro Benito Mussolini aveva pero intenzione di dare l’impressione che la revoca della partecipazione fosse decisione esclusiva del Governo italiano, mentre l’influenza della diplomazia vaticana doveva rimanere segreta.
  • The events that took place in 1925 when the Holy nuncio Francesco Marmaggi left Prague after members of the Czechoslovak government offi cially participated in an event commemorating the death of Jan Hus are well known. Events of 1926 are not as famous. The Sokol Sports Association gathering which was held in that year and fi nished just on 6th July was carefully monitored by the Roman Curia. The Sokol Association itself was perceived by Vatican as a strongly anti-clerical one. The curia diplomacy made effort to prevent participation of foreign guests at this gathering and in some cases they succeeded, for example in Italy. Benito Mussolini who held the office of Italian Prime Minister at that time wanted to retain the notion that the cancellation of participation was purely at the discretion of the Italian government and the infl uence of the Vatican diplomacy was supposed to remain undisclosed.
