| - To understand the real power of the DArT marker system, results from field trials on 41 genotypes were used as an independent dataset for genotype comparisons. Agronomical and chemical trait-based clustering reflects the improvements that have been made to malting barley by breeding in the Czech Republic. Several authors have reported a low correlation between DNA marker-based SMs and isozyme or morphological trait-based SMs. We showed that the DArT-based SM correlated significantly with the agronomical and chemical data-based SM, even for closely related genotypes. This demonstrates the power of the DArT method to accurately reflect the genetic basis of the characteristics or traits of the studied cultivars. The results allowed us to use DArT markers for the evaluation of barley genetic resource diversity. The results of the present study show a general consistency between accessions, geographic origin and groupings, based on the marker results for old genetic resources, even in the micro-region.
