Description
  • Smelters are sources of heavy metal contamination which can cause the enter of toxic elements into the food chain. One of the possibilities to decrease heavy metal concentrations in soils are remediation techniques as phytoextraction. One way to increase the bioavailability of metals could be an addition of synthetic chelating agents as EDTA to the soil, which have the potential to remobilise metals and to form soluble complexes. The 38 days long incubation experiment with addition f EDTA and alfalfa in heavy metal contaminated soils from vicinity of a lead smelter near the city of Příbram was carried out. The obtained results confirm the positive effect of alfalfa on soil microbial activities after EDTA treatment for the time at least 24 days. The alfalfa did not affect heavy metal concentrations increased by EDTA amendment. Addition of alfalfa affected positively the soil microbial biomass. The amendment of organic substrates can reduce the negative effects of EDTA on soil microbial activities.
