| - Analysis of archaeological finds, particularly those uncovered in the second half of the 20th century, has shown a tie between the cultural traditions of the Bronze Age and the subsequent Iron Age. This can be seen in iconography, for example. Themes are found that were known in the art of the Aegean cultures of the Bronze Age, but the intervening stages of their transfer to the Iron Age period are often missing. Oral traditional also played a role, as did preserved artefacts from the Bronze Age that were rediscovered by the historical Greeks. Figural decor makes its way into Protogeometric and Geometric art at an early date, inspired partly by older local tradition, partly by influences from the East. A subject that appears early on and is one of the traditional narrative scenes is hunting. For the Greeks of the time it appears to have been an eloquent metaphor for the basic questions of the existence of man in confrontation with an external world full of demonic beings and wild animals, controlled by the Mistress of the Animals. The iconography of this powerful goddess with a great tradition shows that some traditional themes are transformed even during the period of Archaic art. They start to appear on less important parts of the artefact and become more and more humanized. Towards the end of the Archaic period the traditional heraldic scheme of the goddess starts to recede.
