Description
  • Two swords found in opulent male Graves 55 and 120 in the burial ground near Libuše pond at the Old Slavonic stronghold of Stará Kouřim belong undoubtedly to the most mysterious weapons of Early Medieval Bohemia. The first sword (from Grave 55), accompanied by a special belt garniture with trefoil belt fittings, does not have a preserved pommel or cross-guard. The second (lifted from Grave 120) is an unusually short two-edged sword with a pattern-welded blade, and also bears no significant typological features. A more detailed determination of the swords is not possible due to their typological indeterminateness, but the archaeological context, in which the weapons were found, is interesting. The swords belonged to the inventory of the most opulent male burials that, in terms of the grave goods largely consisting of imports from distant areas, come from the earlier stages of the use of the burial grounds, i.e. from the first two thirds of the 9th century. Both weapons differ from each other with respect to blade construction and functional quality of the preserved blades. The sword from Grave 55 is, due to incorrect heat treatment, only of mediocre quality; the sword from Grave 120 is a weapon of high quality with cutting edges of hypereutectoid steel, which might have been some kind of crucible steel. A comparison of the reviewed archaeological context with the results of metallographic examination deepens the possibilities for interpretation of the discussed weapons and allows us to place them into a broader cultural-historical framework.
