Description
  • First birds were collected in the territory of the modern-day North Korea in 1887–1888 by Jan Kalinowski. I restudied the surviving part of the Kalinowski collection in the Museum and Institute of Zoology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The restudy of specimensand a review of the data published by Taczanowski in 1888–1890 showed that Kalinowski collected 17 species of birds in the territory of the modern-day North Korea. The collection included speciesnow on the verge of extinction, such as Nipponia nippon (Threskiornithidae) or Dryocopus javensis richardsi (Picidae), and species whose taxonomic status remains unresolved (Haliaeetus pelagicus niger; Accipitridae).
