Description
  • The most of the pathogens found in water resources and causing serious infections comes from the faeces of humans or warm-blooded animals. Thus the safety of especially drinking and recreational water needs to be ensured. The crucial steps in this process are rapid and reliable detection and identification of enteric pathogens in aquatic environments. The conventional methods used for their identification are based on cultivation on selective growth media and biochemical confirmation tests. Such methods are known to have many limitations, for example low specificity, low sensitivity or time consumption. The aim of this study was to employ the genetic information of some water-borne bacterial pathogens to increase the specificity of their identification. We developed and tested the use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for identification of the following pathogenic bacteria.
