The collected isolates of Potato leafroll luteovirus (PLRV) will be characterised on the basis of their biological properties which will be correlated with the newly sequenced as well as published genomic data. Gained knowledge of its biological and molecular characteristics will be used for the design of diagnostic procedures and methods with improved reliability of detection suitable for both serial and special viral assays. The newly obtained genomic sequences will also be used in the design of expression cassettes and vectors for the transformation of selected potato cultivars. Production of transgenic lines with increased resistance to this important pathogen is anticipated. The levels of resistence levels in these transgenic lines will be verified using both artificial and natural inoculation/infection with consequent laboratory evaluation. (en)
