Description
  • The long-range objective of this project is to elucidate the structure of cell wall polysaccharides, to study the formation and regulation of them in red microalga Porphyridium cruentum. The proposed study comprises three main aspects: 1. The appearance of cell wall constituents (sugars, protein moiety and sulphate) will be followed and analyzed throughout the cell cycle in synchronized cultures. 2. The mode of action of cell-wall inhibitors and their effect on cell wall composition and appearance will be investigated. The composition of polysaccharide of the cell wall modified mutants will be also analyzed. 3. The cell wall polysaccharides will be prepared in non-labeled and 13C labelled form, isolated, purified by various chromatographic modes and characterized by comparison of 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy.
