The project is focused on basic research of specialty optical fibres (SOFs), including photonic crystal fibres (PCFs). The project will include birefringent SOFs and PCFs made of different materials and is motivated by the practical use of the SOFs, including the PCFs, as sensors of various physical quantities. The scientific goal is to obtain the original results in the field of fibre-optic sensors based, e.g., on surface plasmon resonance. The project makes use of precise methods of spectral-domain interferometry, tandem white-light spectral interferometry and other optical methods combined with computer modelling. The project is based on the collaboration with the foreign research teams. In addition, the foreign laboratories provide the technological preparation and structural characterization of the SOFs. In this way the joint research supported by the project provides the access to the present state of knowledge in the fields of fibre optics and fibre-optic sensors. (en)
