Description
| - Costa Rica contains more animal species than any other country of the equal size. In total 894 bird species was recorded from the country. Various ectoparasites are associated with them. Data concerning those parasites are incomplete. Based on our recent studies, ectoparasites on birds in mountain areas of Costa Rica will be studied. The species diversity, prevalence, and infestation intensity of chewing lice (Phthiraptera) as well as ectoparasitic Acari (Trombiculidae, Ascidae, Ixodidae) will be characterized. Species new to science will be described, type material will be deposited in Costa Rican INBio and other museums. Moreover, morphological and genetic variation within the genus Menacanthus as well as within the populations of M. eurysternus, extremely euryxenic and cosmopolitan species, will be studied. Both morphological and genetic data will be used to reconstruct phylogeny of this group of chewing lice. All the results will be published in international scientific journals. (en)
Bude charakterizována druhová diverzita, prevalence a intenzita infestací všenek (Phthiraptera) a ektoparazitických roztočů (Trombiculidae, Ascidae, Ixodidae). Budou popisovány nové druhy pro vědu, typový materiál bude ukládán do kostarického INBia a dalších muzejních sbírek. Dále bude sledována morfologická a genetická variabilita mezi jednotlivými druhy luptoušů rodu Menacanthus i mezi dostupnými populacemi druhu M. eurysternus, extrémně euryxenního a kosmopolitně rozšířeného druhu. Data budou použita pro rekonstrukci fylogenetických vztahů uvnitř rodu Menacanthus. Všechny výsledky budou publikovány v mezinárodních vědeckých časopisech.

| - Byla popsána řada nových druhů ektoparazitů ptáků z řádu Phthiraptera a roztočů. Byly rozšířeny poznatky o krevních parazitech. Bylo nalezeno několik monofyletických linií v rámci rodu Menacanthus s překvapivě nízkou genetickou diverzitou M. eurysternus. (cs)
- Many new species of bird ectoparasites of the order Phthiraptera and mites were described. The knowledge about blood parasites was enlarged. Few monophyletic lines within the genus Menacanthus and surprisingly low diversity of M. eurysternus was found. (en)
