The ability to avoid dangerous organisms is very important preconditions for fitness in wild animals. Most often, animals are confronted by their predators and by an unpalatable or poisonous prey. The reliable recognition of a potential enemy has to precede an efficacious response. Excessive risk as well as purposeless caution handicaps the animal and they may decrease its fitness. The aim of this project is to reveal the abilities of several model taxa (passerine birds, rodents, lizards) to recognize (categorize) dangerous organisms. In laboratory and field experiments, we shall test three hypotheses of cognitive psychology describing objects categorization by animals: a) exemplar theory (Animal possesses the images of a large number of individual enemies); b) prototype theory (Animal possesses the image of a typical representative of a certain category of enemies); feature theory (Animal possesses the image of typical partial attributes occurring in a certain category of enemies). Pomocí laboratorních i terénních experimentů budeme testovat tři hypotézy, kterými behaviorální psychologie vysvětluje kategorizaci objektů živočichy: a) teorie exempláře (živočich zná větší počet jednotlivých nebezpečných organismů); b) teorie prototypu (živočich zná typického představitele určité kategorie nebezpečných organismů); c) teorie znaků (živočich zná dílčí znaky charakteristické pro určitou kategorii nebezpečných organismů).
The project demonstrated (1) presence of complex cognitive processes in animal perception of the predators; (2) innate recognition of predators in wide range of taxa of terrestrial vertebrates; (3) ability of the predators to reveal Batesian mimetic prey. (en)
Projekt prokázal (1) přítomnost komplexních kognitivních procesů při vnímání predátorů zvířaty; (2) vrozené rozpoznávání predátorů u širokého spektra terestrických obratlovců; (3) schopnost predátorů odhalit kořist využívající Batesovskou mimési. (cs)
