Description	Though two anniversaries connected with Metternich are to be commemorated in 2009 – 200 years since his appointment to the Austrian foreign ministry and the 150th anniversary of his death – the personality and activities of the well-known Austrian chancellor has been researched less than might be expected. Such is the case regarding Metternich’s diplomacy in the Near East. In this project I will focus on Metternich’s policy towards the Ottoman Empire as well as the Austrian-Ottoman (Turkish) relations in the period which has also been mostly unresearched up to the present time. Attention will be paid to political, economic, religious, cultural and military history. Metternich engaged in all these spheres, from the support of Austrian merchants to his cooperation with Ottoman reformers and the protection of the Jews and Christians. As to the fact that the topic remains unresearched up to the present time, an extensive research of unpublished documents housed in European archives must be carried out. The outputs will be published Czech, German and English, papers and one book. (en) I když v roce 2009 uplyne již 200 let od nástupu knížete Metternicha do funkce rakouského ministra zahraničí a 150 let od jeho úmrtí, stále je možné nalézt témata spojená s touto významnou osobností moderních dějin, která zůstávají neprobádaná. Jedním z nich je i jeho diplomacie na Blízkém východě, který byl stejně jako dnes jedním z neurologických bodů mezinárodních vztahů. V tomto projektu se proto zaměřím na Metternichovu politiku vůči Osmanské říši v širším kontextu rakousko-osmanských (tureckých) vztahů, které rovněž zůstávají mimo hlavní proud zájmu českých a zahraničních historiků. Pozornost bude věnována nejen politickým, ale i hospodářským, kulturním, náboženským a vojenským dějinám. Metternich se angažoval ve všech těchto oblastech, od podpory exportu rakouského zboží do Osmanské říše přes spolupráci s osmanskými reformátory až po ochranu Židů a křesťanů. Vzhledem k minimální zpracovanosti tohoto tématu bude projekt postaven především na výzkumu v zahraničních archivech a získané poznatky budou prezentovány v českém, německém a anglickém jazyce, ve studiích a monografii.
