Description
  • Diet specialisation, a driving force behind morphological and behavioural diversification, has been a frequent subject in the zoological literature. The literature on specialised predators is biased towards aphid-, ant- and termite-eating predators; woodlice-eaters (oniscophages) have been neglected so far. The proposed project aims to contribute to the knowledge about oniscophagy in spiders, particularly six-eyed spiders of the subfamily Dysderinae. In selected species, affinity to woodlice as prey, predatory behaviour, cheliceral morphology and content of isotope 15N in body will be ascertained in laboratory. The stable isotope 15N is known to be enormously accumulated in woodlice bodies. In case the diet and the predatory behaviour will correlate with cheliceral morphology and content of 15N, the latter characteristics will be used for prediction of diet and predatory behaviour in species, where living material for experiments will be inaccessible. Furthermore, the hypotheses explaining the evolution of more tactics of capturing woodlice, previously observed in these spiders, will be tested by behavioural experiments. In combination with the knowledge about the phylogeny of the subfamily Dysderinae (parallel project of the University of Barcelona) the proposed study will significantly contribute to the understanding of evolution of diet specialisation of spiders on woodlice.
