The project is focused on the investigation of molecular diversity and species concept of green aerophytic algae based on model genera Klebsormidium and Asterochloris. Strains obtained from various aerophytic substrata will be investigated. Within these two genera, the cryptic diversity, morphological differentiation and biogeography of particular species will be studied. The species boundaries will be determined by combination of phylogenetic (DNA sequencing and phylogenetic analyses), morphological (synapomorphies investigated) and biological (CBC species concept by means of acquiring complementary base changes in the ITS2 region) species concepts. The species will be further investigated to reveal their biogeography (proportion of endemism) and substrate specificity. The results will be applicable for diversity assessment of aerophytic algae and for evaluation of geographic distribution of their species. (en)
