| - The main objective of the project is to enhance our understanding of the historical processes and developments in Syropalestine during the period defined by the advent of writing ca. 3000 B.C. and the dawn of the Hellenistic era ca. 300 B.C. The historians usually classify the region as a peripheral territory between the Great Powers. At the same time, however, it was the cradle of equally powerful, yet less known empires, as well as the centre of innovation of the Semitic languages. The project will proceed in 3 steps. First, the written culture will be presented as an integral, yet distinct part of the Ancient Near Eastern literature. Next, the variability of the local written culture will be laid out in 4 volumes of translated texts with commentaries. Finally, the historical reconstruction will make use of both the textual and the artifactual data. The recent increase of archeological activity in the region makes this synthesis promising and highly desirable. While projects similar to each of these three steps are already in existence, the undertaking as a whole is unparalleled. (en)
- Hlavním cílem tohoto projektu je přispět k lepšímu porozumění dějinných procesů a vývoje starověké Syropalestiny. Časově je vymezen nejstaršími písemnými záznamy z doby ca. 3000 př. n. l. na straně jedné a počátky helénismu na straně druhé. Historické vědy tuto oblast obvykle považují za periférii závislou na okolních mocnostech Mezopotámie, Egypta a Anatolie. Zároveň však byla kolébkou stejně mocných, i když méně známých říší a inovativním centrem semitských jazyků. Cíle projektu bude dosaženo ve třech krocích. Nejprve bude písemnictví Syropalestiny představeno jako integrální, ale i odlišná součást písemnictví starověkého Předního východu. Poté bude ve čtyřech svazcích formou komentovaných překladů demonstrována různorodost syropalestinské psané kultury. Navazující historická rekonstrukce následně spojí textová a artefaktová data. Takto pojatá syntéza je – ve světle zvyšující se archeologické aktivity v celém regionu – nepochybně velice potřebná. Zatímco ke každému ze zmíněných kroků existují určité paralely, celková architektura projektu je i ve světovém měřítku ojedinělá.
